We probably all know this story. A long time ago, the naive Aztecs believed that their god Quetzalcoatl - the Feathered Serpent, had once abandoned his followers and headed east, sailing away on a raft into the unknown. With his last words, however, he gave his students and followers some encouragement by promising them that he would return to them one day. In this story, Quetzalcoatl was supposed to be a bearded man with a fair complexion.
