In his work “The World as Will and Representation,” the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer develops the concept of “will” as an intangible substratum that holds together all beings and things in the world. Within this framework, he sets out in detail the foundations of human suffering, as well as its main cause: the desire that emanates from the will-to-live. Will man have to conform to the pendulum of pain and boredom? Is there any real way out of suffering? ⌚ Timeline: 00:00-02:40 - Introduction 02:40-08:53 - The Will to Live 08:53-13:15 - The Evil of Desire 13:15-18:03 - The Vital Pendulum 18:03-24:02 - Human Consciousness 24:02-27:17 - The Denial of Suicide 27:17-29:41 - Artistic Contemplation 29:41-33:02 - Ethical Progress 33:02-35:31 - Conclusion 🎙️ Support the channel ► / ramtalks 🤝 You can also support the channel via: Paypal: paypal.me/ramtalks Bitcoin: 1J8tdVXCNGRmhX1AXE43ELrocN3f41kd47 Ethereum: 1LuaK9b8hRf9w4a8dwgYxhStvH9rWX6g2v 📖 Recommended books ► https://amzn.to/3nXBAIg https://amzn.to/3urCL51 https://amzn.to/33qnqFQ https://amzn.to/3xQ8hM6 Hey! Thus, the whole of human life is usually filled with concern for the preservation of existence under harsh demands that are renewed every day. The individual is mercilessly threatened by the most varied dangers and catastrophes, from which he can escape only by exercising constant vigilance. With cautious steps and restless eyes about him he goes on his way, for a thousand contingencies and a thousand enemies lie in wait for him. Thus man went in the wild, and thus he goes in civilized life; there is no safety for him. Put simply, we do not know why we are here, what our ultimate goal is, both individually and collectively - if there is one - and, to top it all off, no higher entity, universal force or deity will take it upon itself to reorganize and transform matter to satisfy our vital needs and protect us from the contingencies that the environment offers us. Given this, what are the more immediate implications? Let us look at a passage from his book The Sorrows of the World: “Anyone who wishes to banish all doubt about how to look at life and needs a compass to guide him through the course of it, could do no better than consider it a fatal penance, a colonial punishment, a place of atonement.” Indeed, the natural state of man is suffering. Contrary to what countless philosophers preached, Schopenhauer maintains that misfortune is the general rule of life, and not the exception. In fact, this is the first of the four noble Buddhist truths, and is called dukkha: discomfort in all its forms (pain, sorrow, affliction, anguish, stress, etc.) is inherent to existence in the world. Even so, is it really legitimate to proclaim that suffering is a cyst in the human species simply because our preliminary status quo has been convoluted? Beyond the fact that our initial and current conditions are considerably harsh, what justification does the German offer?
