Whether Tinder, Bumble, Hinge or Grindr - dating apps have changed our dating culture. Preferences can be adjusted, algorithms show the best matches... But what influence do they have on our relationships? Our psyche? Our society as a whole? While some people find what they are looking for there - be it a relationship or casual sex - many now have "dating burnout" or "dating fatigue". The criticism: the constant swiping fuels the feeling that "something better" is out there, and the search for love and romance is being commercialized. Then there are situationships, ghosting, catfishing and other intrusive behavior. But does that mean we have to demonize dating apps? After all, they offer singles opportunities that dating in "real life" does not offer. For many people from the queer community, dating apps can be a place of refuge, a safe space that opens doors for minorities, and time and again you hear about success stories, about marriages that are concluded and about “Tinder babies”. So do dating apps ruin love, or do we just need to learn to deal with them better? We’ll discuss this in “13 Questions”. #onlineDating #DatingApps #relationship Our participants: Kim Hoss, communication designer; Christian Hemschemeier, single coach; Sonja Bröning, professor of developmental psychology; Marie-Josephine Ludewig, social media expert, former Tinder employee; Pia Kabitzsch, psychologist; Duke Duong, influencer & trans activist Chapters: 00:00 Intro 00:10 Do dating apps make you unhappy? 01:35 What are your experiences with dating apps? 03:42 How have dating apps saved you? 05:53 Why do dating apps make our society better? 11:11 Do we need to take more responsibility for ourselves when using dating apps? 16:27 Should we work harder on social change instead of blaming dating apps? 17:52 Is it problematic if many people on dating apps are simply looking for casual sex? 28:55 Are dating apps a danger to our society? 29:58 How does the algorithm of dating apps work? 31:36 Does online dating make us more or less capable of relationships? 36:52 Can we agree that dating platforms should do more to ensure that their users adhere to certain rules of conduct and that legal action should be taken if necessary? 38:49 Can we agree on more security features on dating apps and mandatory verification of photos and people? 40:20 Can we agree on more investment by dating platforms in projects for more media literacy, prevention and long-term research as well as Tinder parties?
