Translation: Maxime Le Dain © Bragelonne / Sans-Détour, 2012 ------- The Nightmare of Innsmouth - or The Shadow over Innsmouth, depending on the translation (The shadow over Innsmouth) is one of Lovecraft's flagship works, and for good reason... structured in five chapters, the story is masterfully crafted, with a concern for progression that we know well: presentation of the setting, entry into the setting, problem, exit from the setting - but at what cost?... The author juggles with the types of story: direct testimony (chapter 1), travel story (chapter 2), direct testimony (chapter 3), action scene (chapter 4), finale (chapter 5). The "stitching" is clever, and allows all the elements of the story to be linked with a fluidity that has never been matched before. Of course, we find here many ingredients already encountered elsewhere: a population that degenerates, notably because of the genetic crossbreeding between humans and "not very recommendable things" (cf. #54, The Dunwich Horror), tribes that worship forbidden deities (cf. #45, The Call of Cthulhu) or even a little nod to places already mentioned (cf. #48, The Strange House in the Mist) or entities encountered a long time ago (cf. #3, Dagon). More than ever, Lovecraft manages to weave distressing links between the small story - individual, that of the narrator (which takes on its full importance in the finale) - and the big story (Obed Marsh and his descendants, history of the town of Innsmouth). One does not go without the other. To close this disturbing story, Lovecraft does not seek to relieve the reader - and even provokes the opposite effect. At the bottom of the abyss, there is no resolution.
