We enter the story through the multiplication of stories and testimonies, then the correspondence (superbly transcribed from memory) between the two protagonists: Albert Wilmarth, the professor of folklore at Miskatonik University in Arkham (he will be reused by quotation in The Mountains of Madness) and Henry Akeley, a former academic now a recluse in Vermont. As Lovecraft knows how to do so well, the narrator digs and reveals dimensions that gradually overwhelm him. The letters become insane, the documents (photographs, phonographic recordings) prove to be disturbing. The deeper we delve into the investigation, the thicker the mystery becomes... naturally, a trip to Vermont is necessary... enough to leave one's sanity there forever... The text is fascinating for this progression that Lovecraft now masters to perfection. He now adds mirror effects to it. Because everything is duplicated in the story: Indian traditions rub shoulders with the testimony of nonagenarians, the clandestine recording - the wax roll phonograph in chapter 3 - finds an echo in the strange machine in chapters 7 and 8, and even Wilmarth's journey (chapter 6), so beautiful to read as the author nourishes it with images, shapes, lights and very sensory impressions, is duplicated in the machines used (train then car). Let's not talk about the correspondent, first biased by Noyes, then "split" in his very nature - which will be revealed in chapter 8. In the corner nestles the cavity... in the cavity, the bottomless pit...
