Translation: Maxime Le Dain © Éditions Bragelonne / Sans-Détour, 2012 ------- Completed in August 1926, The Call of Cthulhu is the first work by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, who returned from New York to Providence, having just separated from his wife Sonia Haft Green. The work is masterful in many ways. First, as in a treasure hunt, Lovecraft sows clues – here familial. The narrator's great-uncle is called George Gammel Angell… it's hard not to think of the name of the street where Lovecraft spent the first 34 years of his life: "Angell Street". The sculptor's name is Wilcox, a name found in Lovecraft's maternal ancestry. But above all, the work fascinates with its narrative layers into which we never stop delving: the narrator's story (level 0) leads us to his great-uncle's notes (level -1), notes that tell us about the meeting of the American Archaeological Society (level -2), a meeting during which we are told two stories: that of Doctor Webb, then that of Inspector Legrasse (levels -3), who ends up reporting the delirious remarks of the followers (level -4). The mise en abyme becomes dizzying, and the narrative supports multiply, because the testimonies are fleshed out with the article in the Sidney Bulletin and the notes of First Lieutenant Johansen. And, in the end, the narrator is not a witness to anything... all the strangeness and horror of the story are reported; on the threshold of the nightmare, the reader as well as the narrator find themselves on the edge of a void of silence... Then, we see how Lovecraft composes new stories using elements from previous stories: the theme of the sculptor "visited" in his sleep (cf. #30, "Hypnos"), the theme of the submerged city (cf. #15, "The Temple") but here malevolent and sticky, a portion of the seabed brought to the surface, with sculpted buildings and the appearance of an entity (cf. #3, "Dagon"), the theme of hybridization (cf. #23, "The Nameless City"; #39, "Prisoner of the Pharaohs") as well as the now essential Necronomicon (cf. #23, "The Nameless City"; #34, "The Hound"; #38, "The Festival"). Finally, the narrator confides in us in the last lines that it would be better never to read them... a salutary warning, but a bit late... a curse leaps out at the reader, with an absence of choice as disarming as it is bitter. 01:23 chapter 1: The clay abomination 24:55 chapter 2: The story of Inspector Legrasse 1:03:52 chapter 3: The aberration that arose from the waves #Lovecraft #Cthulhu ------- Reading, Illustration and Music of Tindalos ------- Next video: Pickman's model ------- To find the illustrations, music, and the entire universe of Tindalos https://www.tindaloslechien.com To find the stories in mp3 https://hearthis.at/tindalos To follow Tindalos on Facebook / tindalos.lechien.5 For a nice little boost by supporting Tindalos on Tipeee https://fr.tipeee.com/tindalos Want to treat yourself to an illustration of Tindalos? https://www.tindaloslechien.com/bouti...
