The Île de Ré, with its picture-postcard landscapes, is one of the favorite destinations for vacationers in Charente-Maritime. In summer, its population is estimated at around 180,000 people. But the rest of the year, it's ten times less! Eric Perrin wanted to know what it was like to live on an island all year round, even in winter! Eric's guide is Lionel Quillet, a local boy who created one of the most renowned restoration companies for old documents in France in Loix, his native village, coupled with one of the largest independent bookstores. Since 1995, Lionel has also been the mayor of Loix, the smallest of the ten villages on the Île de Ré. As surprising as it may seem, the Île de Ré is more a land of farmers than sailors. Its inhabitants have always known how to take advantage of their environment, with salt, which was exported throughout Europe for centuries, then with oyster farming from the end of the 19th century. Eric meets Brice Kuhnlé, a young engineer from Nancy, who left everything to become an oyster farmer on the island. During a detour to the Île de Ré, we will try to understand what it really means to be an islander. This video is the property of France Télévisions and is protected by copyright.
