Tens of thousands of people gathered in central Belgrade on Sunday, December 22 to protest against President Aleksandar Vucic and the ruling Serbian Progressive Party. The group blames Vucic and his ruling party for the deaths of 15 people when a train station roof collapsed last month. The concrete awning of the newly renovated roof of the Novi Sad station collapsed on November 1, killing 14 people and injuring three others, one of whom later died. Opposition leaders and the public have repeatedly taken to the streets, blaming the accident on shoddy construction due to government corruption and nepotism. The ruling coalition denies these accusations, but Vucic says those responsible must be held accountable. On Sunday evening, protesters turned on their mobile phone lights and observed a 15-minute silence to commemorate the victims. The Serbian news agency Tanjug reported that the number of people in Belgrade had reached 29,000, citing the Interior Ministry. #serbia #protest
