No other animal drives to work every day, or makes plans for a colony on another planet. We humans are not just animals that gather at a watering hole, but thinkers who contemplate existence. Unique individuals, each with their own unique life. We can analyze ourselves thoroughly, and leave nothing to chance. But Melanie Challenger doubts this, she writes in her book: The Animal Within. In it she explains that we are an animal that thinks we are not. All our current problems have to do with exactly that misunderstanding. We have to accept that we have made ourselves too big. People have to know their place in the world that they have changed into a human world. According to Challenger, this human world has alienated us in our thoughts and actions from the rest of the living world and everything we see as threatening in it. We are terrified to admit that we are animals. Why is it important to accept that we are animals too?
