A bridge connecting two states in the north and northeast of Brazil collapsed on Sunday, December 22, as vehicles were passing by. At least one person was killed and sulfuric acid spilled into the Tocantins River. The National Transportation Infrastructure Agency reported that the central span of the 533-meter bridge connecting the city of Estreito in Maranhao state to Aguiarnopolis in Tocantis state collapsed in the afternoon. Authorities said a tanker carrying acid fell into the water. One person was killed and another was rescued alive, according to the fire department. The bridge collapsed while Aguiarnopolis city councilman Elias Junior was filming with a cameraman to warn authorities. The moment was captured on camera. As Junior pointed out a large crack in the bridge’s shoulder, part of the structure began to collapse in front of him. Some drivers managed to stop their vehicles in time to escape. According to initial estimates, there were at least 11 people on the bridge when two trucks, a car and a motorcycle fell into the river. Aerial video released by local firefighters shows the extent of the damage following the collapse. #brazil #bridge #collapsedbridge
