And some strangers gathered around him, and went out with him. 4 After some time the children of Ammon made war against Israel. 5 When the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6 And they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our commander, that we may fight against the children of Ammon." 7 Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "Did you not hate me and drive me out of my father's house? Now therefore, you have come to me in distress." Why have you come to me? 8 So the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “We have come to you now, that you may go with us to fight against the Ammonites, and you will be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” 9 Then Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you take me back to my own country to fight against the Ammonites, and the LORD gives them over to me, will I then be your head?” 10 The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The LORD is witness between us; we will do as you say.” 11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their head and commander.
