To the surprise of scientists, there is a huge gap in our planet's geological history called the Great Unconformity. This means that the Earth's rock formations are missing information from up to a billion years ago - almost a quarter of the entire history of our planet. For the first time, this phenomenon was observed already in 1787, when geologist James Hutton in Scotland noticed that younger rock layers rest much on top of older ones without intermediate layers. Later, the same phenomenon was also observed in other parts of the world, such as the Grand Canyon and the Ozark Plateau, which proved its global nature. But what caused this huge time jump? Scientists have put forward several theories, such as the snowball earth theory, according to which the earth was almost completely covered in ice around 720-635 million years ago. Another theory is related to the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia, which could have caused major erosional processes. Interestingly, right after this lost period came the so-called Cambrian explosion, when complex life began to flourish in an unprecedented way. It is possible that the Great Irregularity had a favorable effect on the diversification of life, as minerals released by erosion enriched the seas and created favorable conditions for evolution. Although scientists do not yet know exactly what caused this massive gap in Earth's history, further research may provide answers. New technologies and methods will help in the future to better understand what happened on our planet a billion years ago.
