The conference entitled “The importance of adherence to therapy: a new pact for patient protection” took place in Rome, in the splendid setting of Palazzo Baldassini. The event, made possible by the unconditional contribution of Gruppo Servier Italia, turned the spotlight on a fundamental issue for public health: therapeutic adherence. This concept refers to the ability of patients, especially those with chronic diseases, to correctly follow the prescribed therapies over time. Ensuring adherence does not only mean improving the quality of life of patients, but also optimizing the resources of the healthcare system and reducing the social impact of the disease. During the debate, it emerged that adherence is a complex and multifactorial challenge. It is not enough for the patient to understand the importance of the therapy: the role of the doctor in motivating them is fundamental, in addition to the constant support of healthcare professionals such as nurses and pharmacists. Non-adherence can lead to worsening health conditions, an increase in exacerbations and hospitalizations, with heavy economic and social consequences. Particular attention has been paid to innovations that can improve adherence. Among these, combination therapies stand out, which contain multiple active ingredients in a single tablet, thus simplifying the management of daily therapy. Recent studies show that these solutions significantly improve adherence rates, reducing the risk of errors and increasing the effectiveness of treatments. The ENABLE network, a European initiative involving over 200 researchers from 40 countries, has been cited as a virtuous example. This project aims to identify best practices to promote adherence, both by improving the training of healthcare professionals and by raising awareness among patients on the importance of therapeutic continuity. Therapeutic adherence is not just a health issue: it has profound social and economic implications. When a patient does not follow the prescribed therapy, the burden of care often falls on caregivers, mainly family members, who find themselves managing increasingly burdensome situations. Furthermore, economically disadvantaged areas record even lower adherence rates, further complicating the situation. To address this challenge, the conference speakers proposed concrete strategies, including public awareness campaigns, clear objectives for healthcare institutions, and effective communication between patients and doctors. Patient empowerment and engagement were indicated as key elements to improve awareness and autonomy in managing therapy.
