Adrian Kuźniar, a philosopher of science from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Warsaw, author of the @Bakcylfilozofii channel on YouTube. However, naturalists noticed other phenomena that were difficult to explain on the basis of creationism. If God created species adapted to specific environments, why do different animals live in almost identical conditions on different continents? Why are there no zebras in South America, although the conditions are similar to those in Africa? Nevertheless, young Darwin interpreted data creationistically for most of his journey. The visit to the Galapagos turned out to be revolutionary. Based on the data collected there, Darwin recognized the truth of evolution and – which is his greatest achievement – in the following years he developed a theory explaining the mechanism of evolution: the theory of natural selection, justifying and documenting it in detail. Not everyone immediately accepted Darwin's arguments, but it is worth knowing that his main work was sought after not only by specialists. Ultimately, Darwinism brought about a revolution in science comparable to the Copernican Revolution, and according to Dr. Hab. Kuźniar, perhaps even greater. So where does the controversy so often present in public discussion come from? The fundamental problem here is the common understanding of the word "theory" as a type of assumption, speculation. "Scientific theories are not speculations, they are judgments for which we have very strong justification," the philosopher reminds. Darwin's theory of evolution meets all the conditions of a scientific theory. It is the simplest, coherent explanation of a number of different types of facts, and at the same time it is falsifiable: we can imagine what would have to be discovered to undermine it (you can listen to more about what scientific theories are in episode no. 217, also with Dr. Hab. Kuźniar). In this episode, we analyze the most frequently raised doubts: whether evolution is random, whether it was possible for such complex structures as the human eye to arise, whether we descend from apes, do we have enough data from the fossil record to confirm evolution, whether there are elements that could not have arisen without some interference (such as the theory of intelligent design proposed by contemporary creationists). It is also about whether we as a species are still evolving. A comprehensive episode, I highly recommend it!
