Excerpts from the book: “The Zen Teaching of Bodhidharma”. Bodhidharma (483 - 540) “He Whose Enlightenment is All-Pervasive”, was a semi-legendary Indian Buddhist monk and teacher, also known as Daruma or Bodaidaruma in Japan. Tibetan sources give his name as “Bodhidharmottara” or “Dharmottara”, that is, “The Highest Teaching (dharma) of Enlightenment”. Bodhidharma is considered the transmitter of Ch'an Buddhism to China and the first patriarch of Chinese Zen. Very little contemporary information is available about Bodhidharma's life, and later accounts are mixed with legends and unreliable details. Bodhidharma's teachings and practice centered on meditation and the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. One of his practices, called “wall gazing,” is cited by him as: “Those who turn away from Illusion, back to Reality, who ‘meditate on the walls’, in the absence of self and other, and in the unity between mortal and sage, and who remain unmoved even by the scriptures, are in complete and silent agreement with reason.” Legend has it that, upon arriving at the Shaolin temple, Bodhidharma came across the precarious health condition of the monks, the result of their inactivity. It was then that he initiated the monks to practice a series of physical exercises, while at the same time transmitting the foundations of Zen philosophy, with the aim of rehabilitating them both physically and spiritually. Thus, Bodhidharma is entirely linked to the creation of Kung Fu, and is considered by many to be the father of martial arts. ???? But due to illusions, you are not aware of it.” Bodhidharma. “Mortals create the mind, proclaiming that it exists. And arhats deny the mind, proclaiming that it does not exist. But bodhisattvas and buddhas neither create nor deny the mind. This is said to mean that the mind neither exists nor does not exist.” Bodhidharma. “Life and death are important. Do not suffer them in vain. There is no advantage in deluding yourself. Even if you have mountains of jewels and as many servants as the grains of sand in the Ganges, you see them when your eyes are open. But while your eyes are closed?”. Bodhidharma.
