This was the beginning of the end of the witch persecution: Although, no #witch was ever persecuted… No witch was never burned… because… #witches never existed!… Only the #ghosts that we claimed to chase! AUTO DE FE of 1610 In 1609, the headquarters of the Court of the #Inquisition of Logroño receives the report of the existence of a large community of #witches in the north of #Navarra. After a year and a half of trial, the most famous Auto de Fe of the Inquisition is held in Logroño on the 6th, 7th and 8th of November 1610. A total of 53 people are tried, many of them accused of #witchcraft. With the first light of dawn, on Sunday the 7th, the prison removal begins with a very pious and colourful procession. Fifty-three prisoners with candles escorted by bailiffs leave the Court of the Inquisition among whom 21 are recognized as penitent (lightly sentenced, 6 of them with a rope around their neck), 21 reconciled (repentant, with a hood and sambenito) and 6 relaxed people who on the night of that same autumn day will burn in the crematorium on the outskirts together with 5 mannequins with their coffins. Following the line of prisoners, the most important civil and religious representation of Logroño until reaching the scaffold, presided over by the #inquisitors #Holguin, #Valle and #Salazar. It will be on this platform where the detailed list of perversities was read (to the astonishment and terror of the people) and then the sentences imposed by the Holy Office. More than four hundred years later, the city of Logroño remembers this episode thanks to a faithful chronicle by an anonymous "journalist" of the time that was published months later by Juan de Mongastón.
