When the Kingdom of Italy declared war on the Austro-Hungarian Empire on May 24, 1915, the armies deployed their respective units in the mountains: the Italians deployed the Alpini while the Austrians deployed the Standschuetzen. On the most inaccessible peaks of the Adamello plateau, on the snowy expanses of the glaciers, in every remote corner of the front, an unforgettable page of history was written, in blood, by men who, without hatred, fought to defend their homeland. The Aosta Valley Alpine battalions were also involved in that war which, given the stakes at stake, had never before been fought by human beings. Aosta was involved for about a month and Val Baltea for over two years! The permanence and operations of those soldiers contributed significantly to the construction of a myth that is still very present in the collective imagination of the country.
