This is an article about Zhang Qian's Western Expedition, the man who pioneered the Silk Road, and Emperor Wu of Han's project to conquer the Xiongnu. The term Silk Road was first coined by German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen to refer to the east-west trade route between Central Asia and India during the Han Dynasty, which was centered on the silk trade. This Silk Road originated from Zhang Qian's Western Expedition. 1. Background of the Western Expedition Zhang Qian's Western Expedition originated from the conflict between nomads and farmers. The Xiongnu were the representative nomads at that time. The Xiongnu were a nomadic horse-riding people who were active mainly in the Great Wall area of the Mongolian Plateau. They invaded farmers in the fall, and Emperor Wu of Han (Liu Bang) was also almost killed by the Xiongnu's Modun Chanyu during the Battle of Pingcheng (Battle of Baideng Mountain). Emperor Wu of Han entrusted Zhang Qian with the Western Expedition as part of the project to conquer the Xiongnu in order to block these Xiongnu. 2. The Road of Suffering, the Western Expedition Zhang Qian set out on a Western Expedition under the command of Emperor Wu of Han to form an alliance with the Yuezhi. In order to get to the Yuezhi, he had to pass through the land of the Hongnu, but Zhang Qian was captured in this land of the Xiongnu. He was held captive for 10 years. However, Zhang Qian risked his life to escape from the Xiongnu and went to the Great Yuezhi (the new name for the Yuezhi). However, the Great Yuezhi no longer had any intention of taking revenge on the Xiongnu, and Zhang Qian had no choice but to return home. On his way back home, Zhang Qian was captured by the Xiongnu again, and escaped again, returning to the Han after 13 years. 3. Zhang Qian's Great Achievements Zhang Qian returned to the Han and became the greatest Western Regions expert in the Han Dynasty, and was even given the high-ranking position of Bo Manghou. Although Zhang Qian failed to form an alliance with the Yuezhi, he returned after recording in detail what happened during his journey. With this information, Emperor Wu of Han was able to subdue the Xiongnu, and 56 years after Zhang Qian's death, he was able to establish friendly relations with the Wusun of the Western Regions. The most important thing was the development of the Silk Road. Zhang Qian's Western Expedition route became the current Silk Road, an East-West trade route.
