The Wegelnburg, also called Wegelenburg, is a castle ruin between Schönau and Nothweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate and the highest in the Palatinate. The rock castle is located at a height of 572 meters on the Schlossberg directly on the German-French border. The Hohenburg, the Löwenstein and the Fleckenstein are also located on the same ridge in the immediate vicinity. The upper castle is about 90 by 8 meters in size. The castle is divided into three zones - lower, middle and upper castle - with the lower castle only on the west side. The inner gate building has been preserved and restored. Rock stairs provide access to the upper castle. Passages carved out of the rock and a rock cellar have been preserved. The parapets on the upper castle do not match their original appearance. Only a few stone remains of residential buildings have been preserved, so the appearance of the castle is difficult to reconstruct.
