On December 26, 2004, an undersea earthquake shook the Indian Ocean. The ensuing tsunami wave devastated large areas of Southeast Asia. More than 220,000 people lost their lives. Around 500 Germans were among the dead, and several thousand were injured, some seriously. The wave wiped out entire families. Those who were lucky enough to survive are still suffering from the effects of the tsunami 10 years later: even though most of the physical wounds have healed, many have suffered lasting damage to their souls. How are the bereaved, the survivors and the rescuers doing, and how has the disaster changed their lives in the long term? How are people dealing with what happened at the site of the disaster today? Could such a disaster happen again? The Focus TV report went in search of clues on the tenth anniversary in 2014 and met people whose lives were turned upside down from one moment to the next in 2004: Lieselotte Narjes from Hamburg only narrowly survived the wave in her Thai holiday resort in Khao Lak, with serious injuries, and was rescued by her husband Heinz, who was physically unharmed but never got over the terrible moments and suffered long-term psychological effects. Stefan Samm from Murnau survived the tsunami, but is still considered traumatized because he lost a good friend in the wave. After the tsunami, he also lost all emotional stability in Germany. Only trauma treatment and meetings in an emergency group helped him to find his way back to normal life. Michael Becker is a volunteer disaster relief worker with the Technical Relief Agency in Freisen in Saarland. Together with a THW rescue team, he went to Khao Lak to search for survivors, but only found dead people in the hotel complexes of the Sofitel Magic Lagoon and the Similana Resort. It was one of the worst and most hopeless missions of his life. Nothing is more exciting than reality - reports on topics that affect Germany.
