The Wartburg is perceived as a "stone history book", as a symbol of historical and cultural developments over long periods of time. Its palace, built in the 12th century as a residential building, is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Romanesque secular buildings north of the Alps. In the High Middle Ages, the Wartburg was the residence and court of the muses of the art-loving Landgraves. As the setting of the legend of the Singers' Contest, it is considered a cradle of German literature. Saint Elisabeth, who is still revered today as a symbol of active charity, lived and worked at the Wartburg in the early 13th century. The Augustinian monk Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German here in 1521/22, thereby laying the foundations for a uniform German written language. In 1838, Grand Duke Carl Alexander of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach decided to renovate the architectural and artistic residence of his ancestors - with the aim of creating a unique monument. The architect Hugo von Ritgen created new buildings on the castle grounds, which by 1890 had added a palace, knight's house, bailiwick and battlements to the castle's current appearance. _______________________ IMPRINT Daniela Bensch Email: [email protected] Facebook ▸ / danielabensch VAT identification number: DE231129701 Person responsible for content in accordance with Section 55 II RStV: Daniela Bensch Leipzig Editing program: Adobe Premiere Pro Camera: Canon EOS M50 Mark II Music: YouTube Creative Tool
