The European Parliament approved the new European Commission on Wednesday, headed by Ursula von der Leyen. Anna Słojewska, Brussels correspondent for “Rzeczpospolita”, spoke about the challenges, disputes and compromises it faces, as well as the Polish position on the EU agreement with Mercosur in the podcast “Rzecz w tym”. There was a week or so, ten days of suspension, when it was not clear whether this commission would actually start operating on 1 December, whether this deadline would be met, or whether there would be some jostling or the need to replace the candidate – said Słojewska. The greatest tensions concerned the candidates representing the far right. – The left had doubts about two candidates of the far right. One was Olivier Verhalli, the Hungarian candidate, Orbán's man, of course, who is to be the commissioner for health. The other was Rafael Fitto, the Italian candidate from the government, Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, also far right, the Brothers Italians. He became the Commissioner for Cohesion Policy and, which the left wing really didn't like, also the Executive Vice-President. – says the journalist. In response to these threats, the Christian Democrats threatened to veto the socialist Teresa Ribera. - The Spanish Christian Democrats accuse her of not coping well during the recent catastrophic flood in Valencia – explained Słojewska. What surprised the correspondent of "Rzeczpospolita" in the current procedure of approving the Commission? - The fact that in the end all the candidates were approved. Because this is probably the first time in 25 years that none of the candidates has been rejected by the European Parliament – said Słojewska. What's next for the EU agreement with Mercosur?
