The Texas Avenger - John Sands, a former Texas marshal, becomes a cattle rancher and later a gunslinger when he sets out to prove that casino/saloon owner Matt Garson had his brother, a newspaperman, killed. The Texas Avenger (1948) Director: Lesley Selander Screenplay: John C. Champion, Blake Edwards Stars: Rod Cameron, Cathy Downs, Reed Hadley Genre: Western Country: USA Language: German Release: February 22, 1948 (United States) Also known as: En revolver för att döda Filming locations: Amarillo, Texas, USA Story: John Sands (Rod Cameron), a former Texas marshal whose talent with guns led to the law turning against him, is a fugitive in Mexico when he learns from "Dusty" Stewart (Cathy Downs) that his brother in the Texas panhandle, Billy Sands (John C. Champion), her fiancé and dedicated newspaperman, has been mysteriously murdered in Sentinel, Texas. Despite the bounty on his head, Sands comes to the northern panhandle to find his brother's killer. Review: John Sands (Rod Cameron), a reformed gunslinger now working as a storekeeper in a Mexican border town, straps on his gun belt and six round rifles again to find his brother's killer. Fists and bullets fly as he finds he's up against not only bad guys, but lawmen who remember his outlaw past. Shot in bright sepia tones amid the rugged landscape of Lone Pine, California, Panhandle is a first-rate Western with a strong plot and thrilling moments as Rod Cameron, as a reformed gunslinger, straps on his six round rifles again to avenge his brother's murder. He's as taciturn as ever as he courts Anne Gwynne - a saloon girl the bad guy has his eye on - and takes on Myron Reedly's villainous town boss. Blake Edwards steals several scenes as Floyd Schofield, the main villain's hired thug and Billy the Kid wannabe with an unpredictable side. I loved the scene where the thug asks Cameron about his showdown with Billy the Kid. Cameron obliges and sets up the story, which really gets the thug excited. He waits for the climax when Billy the Kid refuses the showdown. "What happened?" the thug asks, and Cameron replies, "Then Billy the Kid killed me." That really pissed the thug off! In fact, there's some clever dialogue that's just as sharp as the action - car chases, showdowns and one in the rain, and a pretty energetic fistfight, all done with gusto. It's a solid western that's a little underrated. It was remade as The Texican, starring fellow fast shooter Audie Murphy.
