Week 26 2010 - On July 1, 1863, slavery was abolished in Suriname. This date is one of the most important in its history. Until 1814, the Netherlands traded Africans as slaves. They worked on the Dutch coffee and sugar plantations in Suriname and had the status of tools. Nothing more and nothing less. The Netherlands colonized Suriname for 300 years, until 1975. What does all this mean for the Netherlands? How consciously does Dutch history deal with this and is it all part of this history? Anil Ramdas talks about this with Barryl Biekman, chairman of the National Platform Slavery Past and historians Bert Paasman and Piet Emmer, who have both been intensively involved with Dutch slavery.
