The story of Lot, peace be upon him, in the Qur’an The Qur’anic stories have their own way of presenting facts and presenting ideas to introduce them to hearts in a vivid image; This is done by representing these facts in their realistic image, as they flow in human life, as water flows in its path. The story of Lot, peace be upon him, is one of the Qur’anic stories that the Holy Qur’an presented in its realistic form, intending through it to present the facts of faith, establish the foundations of monotheism, and clarify God’s way of dealing with those who wrong themselves and turn away from the path of guidance and righteousness. The story of Lot, peace be upon him, and his people was repeated in the Holy Qur’an in many Surahs, including: Al-A’raf, Hud, Al-Hijr, Al-Anbiya, Al-Shu’ara, Al-Naml, Al-Ankabut, Al-Saffat, and Al-Qamar. This story came sometimes in a detailed form, and sometimes in a form that was somewhat abbreviated, and it came in each Surah in a style that had its own implications, purposes, effects, and significance. The gist of the story: The events of the story of Lot, peace be upon him, with his people take place in an area called (Sodom), and the gist of its events is that Lot, peace be upon him, who is the nephew of Abraham, peace be upon them, had believed with Abraham, peace be upon him, and migrated with him to the land of the Levant, so God Almighty sent him to the people of (Sodom), which is today part of the occupied lands of Palestine and the surrounding villages, calling them to God Almighty, commanding them to do good, and forbidding them from the sins they were committing, and the obscenities they were committing, which no one from the sons of Adam or others had done before them, which is intercourse with males. Analysis of the elements of the story: This Qur’anic narrative event consists of a set of elements, organized as follows: First: Lot, peace be upon him, called the people of Sodom to the true religion and to the straight path, and he began his call with the command to fear God; As it is the angel of the whole matter, {So fear Allah and obey me} (Ash-Shu`ara’: 163), then He informed them of the affair of the Messengers, peace be upon them all, that he is a trustworthy Messenger, and that he does not ask them for a reward for his call to them to the clear truth, {And I do not ask you for any reward for it. My reward is only from the Lord of the worlds} (Ash-Shu`ara’: 164). Second: The prohibition of the immorality that they were committing, and which no one in the worlds had preceded them in, this came in a number of verses and expressions, {Do you commit immorality such as no one in the worlds has preceded you in?} (Al-A`raf: 80), {Do you commit immorality while you are seeing?} (An-Naml: 54), {Do you indeed approach men and cut off the way and commit in your gatherings evil?} (Al-`Ankabut: 29). Third: The position of the people of Lot, peace be upon him, towards the call of Lot, peace be upon him, was represented by rejection, mockery, belittlement, threats and intimidation, which is what is expressed in the noble verses: {Expel them from your city. Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure.} (Al-A’raf: 82), {They said, “Did We not forbid you from the worlds?”} (Al-Hijr: 70), {They said, “If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be among those expelled.”} (Ash-Shu’ara: 167), {Bring us the punishment of Allah, if you should be of the truthful.} (Al-Ankabut: 29). They did not do what they did out of shame or heedlessness of the people, but rather they declared their immorality and were open about their falsehood, belittling what Lot, peace be upon him, had brought them, and mocking values, virtues and morals. Fourth: The position of Lot, peace be upon him, towards their rejection and aversion, was represented first by his denial of them, and his statement of his hatred and loathing for this action that they were doing, {He said, "Indeed, I am of those who dislike your work."} (Ash-Shu'ara: 168), then he called upon his Lord to save him from the wrongdoing people, {My Lord, save me and my family from what they do.} (Ash-Shu'ara: 169). Fifth: Lot, peace be upon him, tried to turn his people away from the immorality that they were committing by calling them to marry the women whom God created for that purpose, and this is what we read in the Almighty’s saying: {These are my daughters; they are purer for you.} (Hud: 78), and the (daughters) in the verse refers to the women of his people; for the Prophet is like a father to the nation. So he directed them to their women, and they apologized to him by saying that they did not desire them, {They said, "Indeed, you know that we have no right to your daughters, and indeed, you know what we want."} (Hud: 79). The commentators mentioned that their men were satisfied with each other, and their women were also satisfied with each other! Sixth: This narrative event included God Almighty sending a number of angels to reassure Lot, peace be upon him, and to confirm his position, {And they said, "Do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will save you."} (Al-Ankabut: 33). This heavenly delegation denounced the actions of the people of this village, and described them as injustice that deserves painful punishment, {They said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of this city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers."} (Al-Ankabut: 31), {Indeed, we will send down upon the people of this city a punishment from the sky because they have been defiantly disobedient."} (Al-Ankabut: 34). Seventh: Explaining the consequences of those who turn away from the guidance of Heaven and who belittle the message of the Prophets, as the Almighty said: {So the blast seized them while they were shining. And We turned its upper part into its lower part, and We rained down upon them stones of hard clay.} (Al-Hijr: 73-74), and the Almighty said: {So when Our command came, We turned its upper part into its lower part, and We rained down upon it stones of hard clay, one after the other.} (Hud: 82). The Almighty has explained that His wisdom required that the consequences of these wrongdoers should last after them.
