He established his reputation as a great mathematician and scientist by inventing and developing a wide range of ideas, including the theory of invariants, the axiomatization of geometry, and the notion of a Hilbert space, one of the foundations of functional analysis. Hilbert and his students provided significant parts of the mathematical infrastructure necessary for quantum mechanics and general relativity. He was one of the founders of proof theory, mathematical logic, and the distinction between mathematics and metamathematics. He adopted and strongly defended Georg Cantor's set theory and transfinite numbers. A famous example of his world leadership in mathematics is his presentation in 1900 of a set of open problems that influenced the course of much 20th-century mathematical research. ► COMPLETE MATH COURSES / mathrocks #hilbert #einstein #history ????
