In short, the Taniyama–Shimura conjecture states that every elliptic curve can be uniquely associated with a mathematical object called a modular form. If Fermat’s Last Theorem were false, then there would exist an elliptic curve such that it cannot be associated with any modular form, and therefore the Taniyama–Shimura conjecture would be false. Therefore, Taniyama–Shimura proves Fermat’s Last Theorem. The proof of the Taniyama–Shimura conjecture was already a major challenge, as it was one of the points of the so-called Langlands Program, the aim of which is to unify areas of mathematics that are apparently unrelated to each other.
