Although his father's last name was Torresola, he always had more attachment to his maternal grandfather who baptized him as José Antonio Ruiz Negrón since his father abandoned him. At the young age of 13, together with Charlie López and the Orquesta La Nueva, he recorded the song Salsa buena and it became a hit since a teenager was making his mark in this genre. With this group he also recorded, along with his mentor Ismael Quintana, the version of the song Muñeca with Eddie Palmieri. Between 1975 and 1976, José Antonio Torresola Ruiz, better known as Frankie Ruiz, was part of La Dictadura and La Moderna Vibración, the following year, he was a vocalist in Roberto Rivera's Orquesta La Solución. However, a sad episode marked his life forever. In the 80s, his mother decided to move to Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, with Frankie and his brother Víctor Rolando, better known as “Viti” Ruiz. His third brother, who was nicknamed “Junito”, died in New York after a drug overdose.
