Who was Ceausescu? What did he do in Romania and why was he known as the Red Dictator? Nicolae Ceaușescu was a Romanian communist politician and dictator. He was the Secretary General of the Communist Party of Romania and the President of the Socialist Republic of Romania from 1965 until his death. The era of Ceausescu's rule in Romania was accompanied by widespread repression and violence, and during his time, Romania had the toughest government in the Eastern Bloc. This era was mixed with nationalism and hostility to foreign countries, which included not only the Western powers but later the Soviet Union as well. His government fell in the wake of the Romanian Revolution in 1989, and Ceausescu and his wife Elena Ceausescu were sentenced to death after a famously brief trial broadcast live on television. A few minutes later, the two faced the fire squad and were shot. Their death was the last execution in Romania before the abolition of the death penalty law on January 7, 1990.
