Mortada is an Iraqi young man who left Iraq and traveled through Turkey to seek asylum there. After the authorities there rejected his asylum request, he decided to continue on his way to reach one of the European countries on a difficult and dangerous journey with a group of people, and finally settled in Germany, which he arrived in from Greece on his dangerous journey, the details of which he narrates. Mortada passed by people who offered him help without asking for anything in return, including a German girl he had met in Greece after arriving in Germany. The girl helped him and put herself in danger for no reason. He also met an African man in Greece who helped him get off the island he was on and into the capital, Athens.
