The Hessencourrier puffs along the 33 kilometers from Kassel to Naumburg at a speed of up to 40 kilometers per hour, the old steam locomotive trudging up gradients of up to three percent. 45 members of the operating association - only ten of whom are really active - take care of the maintenance of the old trains and the route. The volunteers have now restored one diesel and three steam locomotives with 15 carriages. The association has existed since 1970. Up to 3,000 people take the ride every year, and the trips around St. Nicholas in particular are booked out months in advance. The volunteers do everything themselves. They meet twice a week, carry out route checks, maintain the route, and work on the locomotives and carriages. Many sacrifice more or less all of their free time for the association. They teach themselves everything they do. Every eight years a locomotive has to undergo a major inspection. The locomotives have to be completely dismantled and reassembled. This takes several years - and costs several tens of thousands of euros. The association would like to see its work continuously supported; up to now, members have had to rely on donations and unplanned financial injections. The far greater problem, however, is the lack of young talent. There are always people who join in for individual events, but only a few of them stay for years. One ray of hope: Anna Becker, a young physicist, has just completed her stoker's exam, and a young train driver regularly travels from Berlin to support the association.
