«We live in societies that encourage low passions», says the renowned writer Juan Manuel de Prada, one of the essential voices of Spanish literature. We find low passions in Fernando Navales, the protagonist of his latest novel Mil ojos oculta la noche (A Thousand Eyes Hides the Night) –he was also the protagonist of La máscara del héroe (The Mask of the Hero), a despicable character dominated by frustration and resentment in a Paris occupied by Nazi Germany. Alongside this disillusioned writer, we see the greats of Spanish culture such as Picasso, Gregorio Marañón, César González Ruano, Serrano Suñer, Ana de Pombo or María Casares, with their vanities, vicissitudes and honours; sometimes abject individuals, talents without a soul or with a lost one, bordering on the purest picaresque novel. De Prada tells us that «practically all of them, except Picasso, collaborated with the cultural activities of Falange». We delve with Juan Manuel de Prada into those infamous souls – including that of a Marañón who was healed with masses that forgave his “eugenic exploits.” For him, “the mission of any writer is to show pain, to love the country and, at the same time, to vigorously denounce the evils that are making it rotten or debased.” He maintains that people who live on the edge of danger, people who have been expelled from the center and who live on the margins, are more human. Their desires are stronger, their needs more pressing and that makes them more alive and vibrant characters. His characters live there, in the tragedy. Ramón J.
