The Snow Queen (Snedronningen) is a fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. It was first published in 1845, and focuses on the struggle between good and evil experienced by two children, Kay and Gerda. The tale is considered by scholars, critics and readers to be one of Andersen's best works, being also one of his most extensive writings. It is regularly included among the selected stories and collections of his work, as well as being frequently reprinted in editions of illustrated story books for children. The story has been adapted into various media, including television dramas, video games and animated films, among which the most notable are The Snow Queen (Russian: Snezhnaya koroleva), directed by Lev Atamanov, which screened at the Berlin, Cannes, Moscow and London film festivals, and Walt Disney's Frozen, released in November 2013; winner of two Academy Awards.
