Sealand is the smallest country in the world, located in an old military fortress in the North Sea. During World War II, Britain built a sea fortress called Roughs Tower to defend its coast from German attacks. After the war, the fort was abandoned, but in 1967 former British Army Major Roy Bates took it over and declared it an independent nation called Sealand. The Bates family settled in the fort, drafted a constitution, printed stamps, and issued passports. Sealand's declaration of independence attracted attention and led to conflicts with the British government. In 1968, British authorities charged Roy Bates' son Michael with illegal gun possession, but the court found that Sealand did not fall under British jurisdiction. This was practically interpreted as a recognition of Sealand's sovereignty. In 1978, Sealand was the target of a coup d'état when German businessman Alexander Achenbach and his hired mercenaries attempted to capture the fortress. Michael Bates managed to escape and led a counter-attack that resulted in the capture of the usurpers. This incident led to an international diplomatic crisis, but strengthened Sealand's position. In the 1980s and 1990s, Sealand developed its infrastructure and national symbols. In 1987, when Britain expanded its territorial waters, Sealand responded by expanding its own territorial waters. Sealand's stamps, coins and passports became popular with collectors, and Sealand's national football team participated in international competitions. In 2000, the internet data center Havenco was started on Sealand, but it stopped operating due to technical and logistical problems. Today, Sealand is a vibrant micro-state focused on environmental friendliness and sustainable development. It produces electricity from renewable energy sources and covers its fresh water needs by collecting rainwater. Sealand's economy is largely based on the nobles, stamps and coins sold through the website. The administration of Sealand strives to improve the living conditions of the community and utilizes new technologies, such as blockchains, in the development of administration. Sealand's legacy as a symbol of independence and ingenuity continues, and the state continues to attract international attention. The government plans to improve its infrastructure and attract new business opportunities and tourists, thus ensuring Sealand's continued growth and development.
