Armin Schmitt from Kerpen probably owns the most impressive, unusual and emotional GDR collection in all of Germany. An incident with a GDR border guard in 1965 was the origin of his excessive passion for collecting, which only fully ignited shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 when he was able to get hold of the uniform of a GDR border guard at a flea market in East Germany. Thousands of exhibits, some of them very rare, now adorn his impressive collection in just 38 square meters in the basement of his own house. The focus of the museum is clearly on the NVA, but unforgettable everyday objects from the GDR can also be admired. Rare medals, historical documents, equipment, honorary daggers, the helmet of a GDR fighter pilot, ID cards, magnificent uniforms and items from everyday life in the GDR await interested visitors in Kerpen. The friendly Kerpen veteran knows every single one of his exhibits, its history and is happy to give visitors a private tour of his impressive collection on request. With anecdotes, emotional stories and personal experiences, he breathes life into the objects and makes history come alive up close. The museum is financed exclusively through donations and its own private funds.
