Behind thick stone walls between colorful flowers and bushes, James B. Thomason paints the world a hundred years ago, when the islanders still lived from the fish trade. Jackie Murray trains the women's rugby team in Lerwick in all weathers and jumps in when the Royal Coast Guard lifeboat is called out to an emergency. The melodies of his band cheer up instrument maker Kenny Johnson during the long winter months. And Raymond Henderson ensures that letters and packages are delivered to the northernmost region at the Royal Postal Service. The nature of the Shetlands is almost untouched, the rocks of the treeless landscape are among the oldest rock layers on earth. In the summer months, thousands of puffins nest in the cliffs and orcas hunt seals. Nature photographers Richard Shucksmith and Brydon Thomason have studied the life of the otters, which are particularly easy to observe here. Elizabeth Johnston spins fine wool from the thick fur of the Shetland sheep for the famous sweaters with Fair Isle patterns, which are also worn by the royal family. And last but not least, the mascot of the royal guard, the Shetland pony, also comes from here. #wocomoTRAVEL #BritishIslands
