April 12, 2023 – with a lecture by Prof. Marcin Zych entitled “The Secret Language of Plants” – we inaugurated the fragrance year in the Botanical Garden! ???? A close look at plants reveals that they are like advertising billboards sending various signals to other organisms in the environment, it is only necessary to put on the appropriate “glasses”. ???? Colors, scent, sometimes even movement, are supposed to encourage or discourage contact with roots, leaves, flowers or fruits. ???? This also works on us, although we have almost forgotten the language used by plants. ???? This time we will focus on the chemical language – mainly fragrances emitted by plants and their role in communication with other plants, animals and microorganisms. ––––– Season 2023 AROMATIC BOTANICAL – the fragrance year in the Botanical Garden. Following the example of previous years, we have prepared several lectures for you – this time we encouraged you to experience the Garden using your sense of smell. Let's close our eyes for a moment and talk in the language of smells. Apart from appearance, one of the most important ways plants communicate with their surroundings is through smell. Interaction with pollinators, deterring herbivores or attracting mycorrhizal fungi – these are just some examples of how plants communicate with their surroundings through smell.
