Inaugural session 2024 of the Collège Belgique in Brussels by Professor Thomas Römer of the Collège de France - January 16, 2024 ⬇️ Opening by Professor Didier Viviers, Permanent Secretary of the Royal Academy of Belgium Introduction by Professor Claude Tomberg, President of the Bureau of the Collège Belgique ???? Among the many stories about Abraham in the biblical book of Genesis, there is above all one text that has intrigued or irritated commentators, the story of Abraham's sacrifice in Genesis 22. There is little doubt that this text relates to the question of human sacrifice in ancient Israel and Judah. This question is apparently current at the time when the story of Abraham's sacrifice was born. The conference will show the evidence attesting to the practice of human sacrifice in ancient Israel as well as the strategies to put an end to these practices. ???? Thomas Römer is Administrator of the Collège de France and Full Professor of the Chair of Biblical Environments. His research focuses on the birth of the Bible in the context of the ancient world. From a perspective of the history of religions, his approach is characterized by a philological and literary analysis of the texts, in dialogue with the history and archaeology of the ancient Near East. ▶️ The Collège Belgique celebrates the 15th anniversary of its foundation in 2024.
