This is an ode to the two short sisters Ingerine and Gurine Schewenius from Rui farm. This small homestead of 15 acres can be found up in the mountains in Dalen, Telemark. Two simple people who lived alone all their lives and ran the RUI farm on the steep hillside. You can imagine the work that went into running the farm. Here, there were no modern aids such as horse and cart, electricity or running water. All work was done by hand, and water was carried in buckets from the stream/waterfall. The sisters Ingerine and Gurine had many siblings, but they traveled to America at an early age to seek their fortune there. The sisters stayed with their old father and ran the farm as they always did, without complaining... The sisters were not tall, they measured 120cm., and must have been a strange sight as they tended cows, sheep and roosters the old method. - The spade must go smoothly, it was a saying they learned from their father at a young age. Even if their backs curved like a ski tip, they never complained... the shovel must go smoothly! It was the king who, after reading an article in the newspaper about the sisters' desire to see the castle, took the initiative to arrange a visit. The sisters were not used to travelling...they had hardly been outside the village before, so this was something they were really looking forward to. They sat ready by the side of the road and waited already at sunrise, afraid that they would not join the trip. The car arrived as agreed at 12.00, so they had probably waited quite a while, yes. They thought that the coats, with the worn buttons, were not nice enough to show off in front of the king - so the buttons were cut off and replaced with safety pins - because they were so shiny! The journey into Oslo was by car, and once there they got to meet the king. They were probably a little disappointed with King Olav, because he was not sitting with a scepter and a red velvet cloak - as they had read about in the books. A king, they thought, should also wear a crown on his head, and not smoke cigarettes like Olav. A real king strummed a long pipe, from which he blew large blue rings. Well, after the meeting with the king, we were invited to lunch at the Ski Museum. Here it was more fun than good.. because the ladies were served wine, and without experience with drinks it usually doesn't go well... The sisters had their own technique for drinking coffee....they both poured from the cup into the bowl . This immediately made the coffee a little cooler. The Rui girls had their own grip around the bowl - with the little finger, index finger and thumb on top, and the two middle fingers underneath. In this way, they brought the coffee more steadily to the mouth. The sisters lived a long and happy life up on Rui. Many tourists have probably immortalized their visit with one or more pictures of the two tiny girls carrying heavy brushes or when they work together to sharpen the ax on the grindstone.
