They have been patient with hearts that are inclined to heedlessness, have kept it alive with faith and piety, and have been sensitive to the word of their Lord. They have been patient with their whiny, wailing, and hopeless natures, and have presented their family desires and problems to Allah in prayer. They have been patient with their natures that are prone to laziness, and have sought the imamate in religion. This patience against Satan, the soul, their biological structures, their natural characteristics, and the test of sharia and destiny has made them special guests of Paradise. The verses we have read have shown once again that patience is not a waiting with one’s hands tied. Patience is resistance. It is a person’s struggle, a competition with himself, choosing one among different voices. The greatest patience in the struggle of servitude, in other words, the toughest resistance, is the patience a person shows to his true self. A person who does not resist the desires, habits, and natural characteristics of his true self with faith and consciousness cannot be patient. And the servants of the Most Merciful will be greeted on that day with greetings and wishes of well-being.
