When was Judaism born? What were the beliefs of the first Israelites? How was the Bible written? This documentary compares investigations into religious texts and archaeological discoveries in the Holy Land since the end of the 19th century. This exceptional collaboration between researchers shows that at the time of Abraham, the first monotheistic religion was far from being a coherent entity... Most Israelites, for example, worshiped pagan gods for a long time. Moreover, many of them believed that God had a wife who was herself a venerated idol. It was only after the destruction of Jerusalem that the Jews, exiled in Babylon, began to conceive of the existence of a single, universal god. And it was during the exile (between 597 and 538 BC) that the first five books of the Bible were written. These two tragedies - the loss of Jerusalem and the exile - provided fertile ground on which grew a set of beliefs that later gave birth to Christianity, Islam and our modern world.
