In December 2021, a woman who wished to remain anonymous gave birth at Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto City, revealing her identity only to the hospital. It was the first confidential birth in Japan. This is a further decision by the hospital, which opened the "Stork's Cradle" 15 years ago to take in children who could not be raised by their parents, even if they were anonymous. Confidential births were introduced in response to the SOS of women with special circumstances, in order to protect mothers and children from dangerous isolated births. However, there is no legal backing, and the operation continues to be a trial-and-error process.
