Landing in the Palimiu Indigenous Community – Challenges of Flying in the Amazon In today’s video, I share a unique and challenging experience: landing on the runway of the Palimiu indigenous community, in the heart of the Amazon. It’s a 14-minute video that shows the reality of us, pilots, in one of the most isolated and inhospitable regions in the world. Each flight here is a mix of technique, overcoming obstacles and respect for nature and local communities. Operations in the Amazon are marked by unpredictable obstacles, such as unstable weather conditions, short and improvised runways and the constant presence of the dense forest around. The Palimiu runway, in particular, requires skill and maximum concentration, as it is surrounded by tall trees and has a ground surface that can vary greatly with frequent rains. In addition, planning each flight is crucial. Here, we do not have the same infrastructure as large airports. The lack of signage, modern navigation instruments and ground support makes the challenge even greater. We rely on detailed analysis, prior communication with communities, and often on experience gained from years of practice in the region. This video is not only an opportunity to showcase the technical challenges of flying, but also to highlight the importance of serving communities like Palimiu, who depend on aviation for transportation, supplies, and medical care. Flying in the Amazon is more than a profession; it is a commitment to life and respect for the environment and local cultures.
