At the end of July 1944, after the defeating victories in Tali-Ihantala, Vuosalmi and Nietjärvi, the focus of the last battles of the continuation war became Ilomantsi, where the tired troops of Colonel Torvald Ekman's 21st brigade retreated from the Karhumäki front. In this video, I present the battle locations of the Continuation War in the landscapes of present-day Ilomantsi and Ilomantsi that remained behind the border. The majority of the photos in the video were taken in the summer of 1944. The newer photos on the Finnish and Russian sides of the border were taken during my travels to make my military history books, for which I have applied for and received a border zone permit issued by the border authorities of both countries. Today, border zone permits are no longer issued except to those who live in the border zone! The Finnish troops arrived in Megri and Liusvaara in Ilomantsi on July 16. The next day, the delaying section remained in the area of Megri and a day later Korkeavaara. On July 17, 46 soldiers fell and 29 men disappeared from the Korkeavaara motte. On July 18, the Korkeavaara motte was opened mainly with the help of artillery and the delaying units of the brigade were able to retreat to the village of Liusvaara. In Liusvaara, the 21st Brigade was left behind again on July 21, 1944, only the 4th Battalion managed to withdraw to the Kuolismaa area. I once went to see the moti area in Liusvaara and there you can still see traces of the Brigade's positions on the terrain. On July 22, 1944, the companies left behind in the brigade were able to retreat to Kuolismaa by bypassing the inciting Russian partisan section, going around through the forests, and the main part of the troops retreated from Liusvaara via the road that passes through Kuuttvaara. At that point, the partisan section that destroyed the Finnish sections on the Liusvaara-Kuuttivaara road and in Kuuttivaara had presumably moved to the Liusvaara - Kuolismaa highway to support a larger partisan section? At the end of July 1944, Group Raappana was responsible for the defense of Ilomantsi, which received additional troops from Viipurlahti and Rukajärvi. With this video, we return to the summer of 1944 with the help of old reduced photographs. The soldiers of Group Raappana bore a great responsibility for Finland's future as an independent state in the same way as our soldiers who fought in Viipur Bay, Tali-Ihantala, Vuosalmi and Nietjärvi. I have changed the photos in the video into color images using image processing programs. #ilomantsi #Liusvaara #Kuolismaa #Lutikkavaara #Hullari #Vellivaara #Lehmivaara #Longonvaara #Hattuvaara #Raappana #Jatkosota #Torjuntavoitto #Karhumäki #Porajärvi #Salmijärvi #
