Inaugural lecture by Manfred Kropp delivered on November 15, 2007. Manfred Kropp is a professor at the Collège de France and holder of the European Chair (1989-2008). In his inaugural lecture, delivered on November 15, 2007, Manfred Kropp sets about (re)constructing the first verses of Surah 85, "The Circle of the Zodiac." His resolutely scientific approach to religious texts places him in the rationalist tradition of the 19th century through figures such as Ernest Renan, professor at the Collège de France from 1862 to 1882.
