Esfigmenou Monastery is the only monastery on Mount Athos that has severed all ties with the Ecumenical Patriarchate for 30 years. The doctrinal differences between the Esphigmenite monks and the Central Orthodox have become so acute in recent times that they have even led to scenes of violence. In the summer of 2013, the photo of the monk with a molotov in his hands made the rounds of the Greek internet, after the clashes in Karyes, while at the end of October 2014, police officers invaded the monastery of Esfimenou Monastery in Thessaloniki trying to execute a court order according to the which the apartment on Venizelou Street was to be given to the New Esphigmenite Brotherhood recognized by the Patriarchate. A few days later, a rumor circulated that a visitor-"spy" of the new brotherhood who was taking photographs without the abbot's permission was held "hostage" inside the monastery. Who are these cruel zealots of Orthodoxy who, against all odds, refuse to accept the will of the Patriarchate and remain entombed in the Monastery, under the regime of a peculiar embargo? And how difficult can their lives become, under these conditions? VICE gained rare access, in mid-September 2014, to the only "recalcitrant" Orthodox Monastery. Thus, he had the opportunity to get to know the people who are considered the "Rebels" of Mount Athos and to spend an "illegal" three days inside the monastery, documenting both the hard life of the monks and their attempt to survive cut off from power of the Patriarchate. #agionoros Subscribe to the VICE Greece YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/3mtWeQ2 About VICE Greece: The ultimate guide for a different and in-depth update.
