After several Balinese kingdoms fell into the hands of the Dutch colonialists one by one, either subtly or through military expeditions, there were two kingdoms left that still ruled independently even though they were under the shadow of the hegemony of the colonial regime, one of which was the Klungkung Kingdom, which was considered the most senior of all the Balinese kingdoms. After the Puputan Badung tragedy in 1906, the relationship between King Dewa Agung Jambe as the king of Klungkung and the susuhunan of Bali with the Dutch, which from the beginning had been like embers in the chaff, gradually became increasingly tense. At its peak, when the government decided to monopolize trade throughout Bali in 1908, a major conflict between the king and people of Klungkung and the colonial government was inevitable.
