After the end of the Second World War, the main perpetrators of the Nazi regime stand before the tribunal of the victorious powers in Nuremberg. Among the defendants are Hermann Göring, long the second man in the Nazi state, the former Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and Hans Frank, as Governor General of occupied Poland complicit in the deaths of hundreds of thousands. In their cells, hardly anyone comes as close to them as the American forensic psychologist Gustave Gilbert. Of all people, they confide in the Jewish expert. Gilbert is faced with a mammoth task: a prerequisite for a proper trial is his report on the mental state of the defendants. In the course of the trial, the psychologist becomes one of the most important reference persons for the former rulers. The defendants are alone in their cells most of the time, watched by guards around the clock. In their loneliness, they confide in Gilbert. He meticulously documents the conversations in his diary. The document provides insight into the mindset of the Nazi greats. While they presented themselves to the public as a close-knit community at the beginning of the trial, they made no secret of their contempt for one another to the psychologist. What they did have in common, however, was that no one claimed to have known any details about the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime. And so they – with the exception of Göring – blamed the "Führer", Adolf Hitler, to whom they had sworn allegiance. On October 1, 1946, after 218 days of trial and 236 witnesses, the verdict was passed: death by hanging. Göring preempted the execution by taking his own life with a cyanide pill. Joachim von Ribbentrop and Hans Frank were hanged along with eight other defendants on October 16, 1946. Gustave Gilbert died in 1977. But his legacy remains. To this day, his diaries give us an insight into the thoughts of the defendants at Nuremberg. 00:00 Intro 00:23 Title 00:28 How do the defendants react to the Jewish psychologist? 04:01 What do the defendants think of each other? 08:30 What do the Nazi leaders know? 11:48 What image do the defendants have of Hitler? 14:03 Do Hitler's helpers show remorse?
