Almost three months ago, convicted Laurynas Vilkas, who publicly spoke out about the Pravieniškės prison officers accused of abuse of office who organized the escape of prisoners in the prison, claims that he received a response - the colleagues of the officers who were brought to criminal responsibility are trying to crush him as much as possible. Just for the fact that he dared to speak out about the scandal that shook the entire prison system. "The worst that could have been done has already been done - now I am sitting in the disciplinary group, I have already been warned - one more official report and you will go to prison in closed facilities," L. Vilkas, who is currently serving his sentence in Alytus prison, confessed to Delfi.lt journalist Dainias Sinkevičius. - Therefore, nothing can surprise me now - I will not be surprised at all if I receive any other punishment. A fabricated one. And if they decide to punish me again while I am in closed facilities, then they will take me to Šiauliai prison - the cells there are underground. Maybe that is what they are aiming for, they want that person to see nothing, to be completely isolated, to no longer speak, to have neither calls nor letters, to be unable to communicate with the outside world. And let him sit - maybe the hour will strike when he will be released.” L. Vilkas was transferred to Alytus prison from Pravieniškės - it was here that, while serving his sentence, he and another convict, who has already been released, helped the prison system management uncover an unprecedented crime: two Pravieniškės officers organized the escape of convicts from the prison. In return, they promised the prisoners not only money, but also cigarettes and food. This plan could have been freely implemented, but the convicts told the then temporary head of the prison about the planned crime, who at that time also held the position of deputy director of the Prison Department (now the Service). The convicts were allowed to continue communicating with the officers who organized the escape, but the latter did not suspect anything at the time - they even twice handed over to the convicts the reinforcing bars that they were supposed to use during the escape. The escape of the prisoners, which was supposed to compromise the then leadership of the prison system, did not happen - the prisoners kept "pushing" the time, promising to escape tomorrow, and then again tomorrow, until the officers suspected of abuse of office were detained. If it weren't for L. Vilkas and another convict who was in prison with him, this crime would probably have remained unsolved - the officers who bribed the prisoners hoped that after the convicts escaped, they would move up the career ladder, promised the convicts that they would feel at home in prison, and even hinted that they would be able to invite girls on long-term dates. Pravieniškės prison officers Tomas Čeponis and Povilas Sadauskas are currently on trial. L. Vilkas has already been questioned in the case brought against them, and he told Delfi.lt about how the officers persuaded him and another convict to escape from prison - at that time the convict, who was transferred from Pravieniškės to Alytus, had no idea what troubles he would face. Simply because he told about the possibly dishonest prison system officials. "I didn't see the true face of this correctional facility until I gave an interview," L. Vilkas admits today. "Then I had just arrived in Alytus, no one knew that an investigation was underway, they were completely uninterested in me, no matter what I did, the officers wouldn't even see me. And now wherever you go - they are starving with their eyes and fingers, I don't have a quiet place here anymore."
