The Political Illiterate, a poem by Bertold Brecht The beautiful social poem, The Political Illiterate, by the German playwright and poet Bertold Brecht, is a timeless text that, as long as there is life on this PLANET WE LIVE ON, “our home” “our OIKOS”, there will be room for its constant use and analysis. The worst illiterate is the political illiterate. He does not listen, speak or participate in political events. He does not know that the cost of living, the price of beans, fish, flour, rent, shoes and medicine, depend on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and puffs out his chest saying that he hates politics. The imbecile does not know that from his political ignorance comes the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst of all bandits, the swindler, scoundrel, corrupt politician and lackey of the exploiters of the people. Let's get out of our political comfort zone, let's think, analyze, question and study politics, so we can better choose our political representatives. Remember: everything is politics, from school lunches, to the chair your child sits on to study at school, everything you consume on a daily basis, your leisure time, health, safety, everything is politics. Therefore, we cannot continue living in the cave of political ignorance.
